community resources
Teachers don't have to go half way around the world to bring global education into their classrooms (although I highly recommend it). There are many local business, community-based organizations, educational opportunities, etc right in our own backyards. Opportunities exist in the Great Lakes Bay Region, the state of Michigan, the LCMS Michigan District, and within the larger LCMS. The organizations below have links to many of these wonderful opportunities to get your local communities involved in highlighting the value of global educations.
Local examples: The major colleges/universities in the area have strong global programs. Below each university is a link to some of the programs that support global education.
MSU (Michigan State) –each of these MSU resources connects to programs on the MSU campus in Lansing or speakers available from MSU from various international programs.
http://education.msu.edu/outreach/global/ Programs available to students here help enhance global understanding and encourage study abroad as well as links with the more than 200 international students at MSU. Also available are resources for teachers through outreach programs.
http://globalstudies.msu.edu/ This the link for MSU’s global studies major.
http://cgc.msu.edu/projects/global_engagement Resources available through this site can help the classroom teacher connect with speakers for their classrooms.
UofM (University of Michigan)-- each of these U of M resources connects to programs on the U of M campus in Lansing or speakers available from MSU from various international programs.
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cgis/ This program allows teachers to bring in global programs into their classrooms from U of M’s wide range of cultural and academic offerings.
http://michiganross.umich.edu/programs/global-initiatives It would be a good idea to set up some field trip opportunities to take part in various programs at the Michigan global center.
WMU (Western Michigan University)

SVSU (Saginaw Valley State)

It might also be enlightening to bring professors and students from this program to my classroom.

Michigan district missionaries I would love to have my students connect with missionaries around the world via SKYPE, email or other forms to hear their experiences. Perhaps a prayer warrior pen pal program would work.
